Samsung Looking to Surpass HTC

Samsung is looking to leapfrog HTC in market share. At the current moment, HTC has 7% of the smart phone market while Samsung clings on to less than 5%. Samsung, the second largest cell phone maker, is dragging behind other competitors such as Research in Motion and Apple. Sales of smart phones are expected to increase by as much a 36% by the end of 2010, and Samsung aims to hold 10% market share by then.

What is on the horizon for Samsung? The company is relying on its latest offering, the Galaxy S, to lift its sales and grab the extra market share. The actual number they are shooting for is 18 million units which is triple their current smart phone sales. The Galaxy S has already been introduced overseas in Singapore and Switzerland and is expected to be offered by all four major carriers in the U.S. One interesting note about this story, HTC is currently dealing with shortages of AMOLED displays that it uses on devices like the HTC Droid Incredible, the HTC Desire and the Google Nexus One. Guess where HTC buys these screens? Yep, that’s right! They buy the screens from Samsung. Wait a minute conspiracy theorists. I’m not accusing anyone of any wrong doing. In all likelihood, Samsung is hoarding these screens because they are the same ones being used in the Galaxy S. This is keeping HTC from meeting their demands and rather than wait for Samsung, it is rumored that HTC is going to drop the AMOLED display from Samusung and go with the Sony Super TFT LCD sometime this fall.

There is a big press event in New York on June 29. Could this be the introduction of the Galaxy S to the United States?
