Motorola announced today that 2.7 Million Android-based Motorola Smartphones shipped during the second quarter, up from the 2.3 Million which sold in the first quarter. Analyst, like Ehud Geldblum of Morgan Stanley, and Jim Suva of Citi Bank, expected sales from these handsets to be closer to the 3.1 Million mark.
Motorola pulled in strong numbers overall; getting 8.3 Million total handsets into consumer’s hands, which is still down from 14.4 Million sold the same time last year. But that was before Motorola broke into the smartphone game, with an ad campaign determined to wrestle users away from their iPhones and go Droid.
It remains to be seen if sales of the Droid X, which is off to a great start, and Droid 2 will meet Jim Suva’s expectations of 3.8 million sold in the third quarter.
