LG: Life's Good without Google TV?

Back in May, Google TV was announced with the support of Sony and Logitech. Sony has officially stated that their TVs will support Google TV out of the box. Logitech provides a solution for all other TV sets.

Now, the 2nd biggest LCD TV manufacturer – LG – says that they are not convinced supporting Google TV is the way to go. It appears they are worried that supporting Google TV may give Google TV a monopoly-like power over online TV software. This would also leave LG as a hardware only manufacturer, and this doesn’t sit well with Simon Kang (the CEO of LG). Here is a direct quote from him from July 12.

“Google TV could spark strong interest in the market, but the reason we are deliberating is because Google may one day dominate the software space and we don’t want to end up as just a hardware provider.”

This may mean that LG will eventually provide a software platform to rival Google TV. This is purely speculation at this point, but it will be interesting to see how this unravels.

Luckily, LG owners who do wish to use Google TV should still be able to use the Logitech Revue – which is set to launch in the US this fall.
