Are you a user of the Motorola Cliq or Cliq XT? Then we have some news for you. Android 2.1 is just around the corner. The company is in a testing phase of the firmware and says it should be out over the air shortly.
To some, this may not sound like great news, as 2.1 was scheduled for 2nd quarter, and that deadline has already passed. The delays are likely caused by the custom UI, Motoblur, which comes with the Cliq and XT. The Droid, another one of Motorola’s Android devices, comes with vanilla Android and received a 2.1 upgrade months ago.
An excerpt from the Motorola support forums has this to say:
For those asking for an update regarding a software upgrade on Cliq in the U.S., we’ve made a decision to take more time on the release to optimize the experience in some key areas. We will continue to work to deliver it as soon as possible and apologize that we have been unable to provide an upgrade to these users in Q2 as planned.
We are working hard to provide an upgrade to Android 2.1 as soon as we can. Our consumers’ experience is our first priority and we will provide an upgrade when we can deliver the best possible user experience.
The firmware update will bring live wallpapers, pinch to zoom functionality and voice to text input among other things. It will be interesting to see if Motorola will update their custom UI, Motoblur, to become more useful with the firmware upgrade.
