Some of you may remember the $35 tablet in India that has been mentioned lately. There was an exclusive hands on shown on Indian television that might shed some light on this inexpensive tablet. The show is “Gadget Guru” and is co hosted by Rajiv Makhni and Vikram Chandra. These two went through the motions with the device and then had an open discussion about the device with Kapil Sibal, the country’s Minister for Human Resource Development and happens to be the same person who officially unveiled this ultra affordable touch-screen device.
“Everybody actually said, ‘It cannot happen, a $35 tablet,’ and not only does it exist, it works and it works brilliantly,” said Makhni. The tablet was originally put together as a Linux device, but the one on the show was running Android. It has an on screen keyboard, camera, full video capability, Wi-Fi for browsing, an eReader and 2 GB of RAM. “We really didn’t think it would be as functional as we have found it be,” Chandra said.
The goal of this device is to improve the educational system in India via technology. The plan is to have a million units in the hands of students by mid 2011. They are to be subsidized to higher education institutions for the $35. The retail price will obviously be much higher.
A little video with some action for you.
