3D Android Phones and Tablets in 2H 2011… Oh, and NO GLASSES

Earlier in the year some rumors were floating around that Motorola had a 3D phone in the works. Those rumors turned out to be a device with a transparent clamshell. However, things have changed significantly since then. A video from Netbooknews.com has surfaced with footage of a live, working prototype that at the time of recording is slated for second-half of 2011.

A videogame UI company, Scaleform, was in attendance at GTC 2010 this week and they were showing off a prototype device manufactured by MasterImage and Nvidia that produced 3D imagery and you don’t need special glasses to see it. The Scaleform representative in the video states that it is running on some variant of the Tegra processor but did not offer much by the way of specifications, however, pay close attention in the video and it is sure Android powered.

I have included the video below for all to enjoy but please keep in mind that the same user experience won’t exactly translate to your computer screen.

On another note, it has come to light recently that Nvidia is working with Motorola, perhaps some of these 3D displays might find their way inside of the next generation of Droid devices.

Outside of Android, this could have some potential for Sony. It has been rumored for a long time that Sony will develop a “Playstation phone” and I’m sure a display such as the one seen here could certainly put it on the same playing field as the Nintendo 3DS

Do you like the idea of 3D on your Android device? What are some other uses for a 3D display?
