Alessi and Promelit’s Android tablet for the home, the alessiTab, should be released in November for the Italian market. The 10.1 inch tablet sports an unusual form factor: instead of a dock, the Stefano Giovannoni-designed tablet is shaped like an upside-down number 7 to allow for easy display. Marketed as a “home tablet,” the device features a digital TV tuner (DVB) with an antenna, digital photo frame software, a gigabyte of storage, WiFi 802.1 b/g, and HDMI output.
What the alessiTab doesn’t have is Android Market accessibility, despite the Android 2.1 (Eclair) operating system. The tablet has the apps that Guivannoni decided are needed, and he had a hand in designing the user interface as well. Alessi says they’ll give it a software suite for the home market: Internet radio, news, weather and video recipes. There is also an alarm and a timer, as well as the above mentioned photo software. There is IPTV support, video and audio playback, and videochat hardware: webcame, microphone and speakers. Of course there’s USB connectivity and additional storage is possible using the SD card slot.
Software updates will be delivered over the air (OTA). Look for the alessiTab in Alessi stores and consumer electronics chain stores this November.
