Today, HTC announced the T-mobile G2 phone for the European and Asian markets, and it’s calling it HTC Desire Z. This phone will come with a 800 Mhz Qulcomm 7230 CPU, Android 2.2 Froyo, 3.7″ screen, 14.4 Mbps HSPA+, Wi-fi 802.11n, 720p video recording and a 5 MP (possibly 8) camera with flash.
One thing I’m not too sure about is the name. I think the name is a little odd – HTC Desire Z. HTC is obviously trying to do something along the lines of what Verizon did with their Droid brand, and now they are going to name at least a few phone models “Desire”. We already have the original Desire, Desire Z, and another phone announced today Desire HD. If HTC names too many of their phones Desire – especially if it’s not a next gen phone like the original Desire was – it’s going to cheapen that brand name once they put Desire on every model from mid-end to high-end.
If they want to have a brand category they should at least keep a brand only for a certain price range. So they could keep Desire for all the latest and greatest International phone models. But mixing price ranges like they are doing now, I believe is a mistake.
HTC is also getting deeper into the software side of smartphones and launching a new version of HTC Sense, along with new services for it, but we’ll see that once it’s launched a month from now.
