Samsung's Orion Chip to Have 5x the Graphics Power of Hummingbird

It seems it will be tough to decide which mobile SoC will be better for gaming next year. The fight will definitely be between Tegra 2 and Samsung’s Orion.

Samsung claims that the new chip is going to be a dual core 1 Ghz Cortex A9 CPU integrated with a GPU that has 5x the performance of the latest GPU in Hummingbird. I find that amazing considering Hummingbird already has 2-3x the graphics performance of any other smartphone out there. With Orion, Samsung should leave its competitors way behind, perhaps even Tegra 2.

Nvidia has said that Tegra 2 will have 5x the graphics performance of most single core SoC’s out there, but I assume it didn’t mean Galaxy S, too, which has the Hummingbird SoC. It’s possible that Orion will be better than Tegra 2, but since Hummingbird got out only a few months before Tegra 2, then Orion will only be out a few months before Tegra 3 so who knows which one will be the graphics leader then.

The smartphone market is getting crazy competitive and it’s evolving much faster than the PC or laptop markets ever did, so it’s going to be great for us consumers.

What do you think? Are you going to get a Tegra 2 or Tegra 3 smartphone or get an Orion based phone?
