The Xperia X10 has been one of the most out dated Android phones out there for so long. But no more. It will soon be updated to the 8 months old Android 2.1 Eclair! Isn’t that exciting? I didn’t think so, either.
A white X10 has been spotted at IFA running Android 2.1 and they’ve already mentioned that Xperia X10 will be upgraded to Android 2.1 in September this year.
Why does it take so long for some companies to update their Android phones when for others it takes about 2 months – and even that is considered slow by most Android early adopters? I believe it’s because of 2 main reasons.
1) They didn’t take Android seriously from the beginning, so they didn’t create a big developer teams to support their Android phones. Once they solved all the compatibility issues for a phone they moved on to the next, forgetting about the one they just released.
2) They didn’t think keeping Android up to date is important. All phone companies have gotten used to this – upgrading the phone’s firmware only when they had to fix some bug, but never adding new features. Those were only saved for new phones. Companies like Sony Ericsson come with this mentality from way back, but they will have to change it if they want to survive in the new smartphone world.
Hopefully, with new phones, Sony Ericsson and other manufacturers will take Android and the consumer’s demands a little more seriously and update all their phones as fast as an update is available, and give them many updates as well, not just one.
