Nvidia’s CEO has confirmed that some of their biggest partners are Samsung, Motorola and LG. We already knew about LG, but we only had some very weak rumors that Motorola and Samsung might also support Tegra 2 in the future.
This confirmation and the fact that he also stated that Motorola is an old partner, goes well with the rumor that Motorola will release a Tegra 2 phone by the end of this year. This could be the very first Tegra 2 phone, but also the very first Gingerbread phone. It could be quite a launch for Motorola, especially since it’s holiday season.
Now, the biggest news is still the one where Tegra 2 actually got these very important partners, and they will get HTC along the way, too, because it is rumored they want to build a tablet with Tegra 2. Nvidia has already won over most Android tablet manufacturers, and now it seems it’s winning over the big Android smartphone manufacturers as well. Soon, Nvidia will be the biggest player in the mobile chip market.
Why is this happening? I believe for 2 reasons. First of all they must have the best overall performance chip that will appear in the next few months. They will be the first with dual core Cortex A9 CPU’s, will have very powerful GPU (Geforce 9 graphics), and several other cores tht improve battery life. All these make it the best chip on the market – the chip to get.
Another reason is that 2011 is going to be the battle of GPU’s, as GPU’s become increasingly more useful, like powering games, making a smooth UI, and boosting performance for high resolution displays. The GPU should also enable hardware acceleration for Flash, which should make Flash work perfectly on mobiles. With its Geforce 9 like graphics that makes even Unreal 3 work on it, Tegra 2 is definitely going to be the most powerful GPU in the next few months. And by the time it gets obsolete, Tegra 3 will be out, probably less than a year from now, and Tegra will again be the most powerful chip available.
Nvidia’s CEO must be ecstatic that they are going to dominate the mobile chip market, and Intel can’t even put their foot in the door.
