World Round Up: New Handsets in China and Taiwan – Updates in Germany and UK

Another Chinese first
TD-SCDMA is China’s alternative to W-SDMA and Sony Ericsson have been working hard to produce handsets that will run on it. Enter the A8i (pictured) their first TD-SCDMA phone. China is a massive market and expanding at a phenominal rate. Even if only 1% of the population were to buy a smartphone that would represent 13M people. The A8i is a decent little phone with a 3.5 inch screen and OS 2.1. I particularly like the way they have position the letter i at the end not the beginning.

Stale donuts
With most of us basking in the twin lights of 4G and Froyo, in Germany the O2 Samsung Galaxy GT-I7500 is only just getting upgraded from 1.5 to 1.6. Keep up guys.

Fresh ©clair
Slightly ahead of O2 are T-Mobile UK who are bringing OS 2.1 (‰clair) to the Samsung Galaxy Portal today. I say ‘slightly’ because the Portal has been stuck with OS 1.5 since it genesis. There’s no OTA update apparently and users must upgrade via their Samsung PC Studio software.

No parade for the Nuvifone
Losing track of the number of new Android devices? I know I am. Amidst the justifiable hype surrounding the Epic 4G yesterday, the Garmin-Asus Nuvifone A10 will hardly get a look in. It runs OS 2.1, has half a gig of RAM and a 5Mp camera. It’ll be available in Taiwan on the 10th without a ticker tape parade.
