Angry Birds Publisher Chillingo Acquired by EA Mobile for $20 Million

With such a popular following of its games, for publisher Chillingo, it was only a matter of time before it was on to bigger and better things. EA Mobile, seeing what a powerhouse of mobile games Chillingo has become, wanted a piece of that pie as well. As one of the biggest hits to come out for both iPhone and Android, Angry Birds has soared into the download stratosphere for Chillingo as one of the most addictive games, not to mention one of the fastest downloaded in each marketplace.

It also looks like they are on the way to another hit with the recently released title Cut The Rope.  Currently found only in the Apple App Store, the game is somewhat like Angry Birds in its progression of game play. A player can unlock new levels by obtaining a certain number of stars which are obtained by guiding a piece of candy around a level to feed your pet. Hopefully this title will soon make its way onto the Android market as well.

An EA spokeswoman  confirmed the acquisition today and the Director of Corporate Comm. Holly Rockwood said:

“By acquiring Chillingo, EA Mobile is increasing its market leadership on the Apple Platform as well as reaffirming its position as the world’s leading wireless entertainment publisher”

EA has its own popular line up of games for home systems on the horizon including Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Dead Space 2, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.  Now with this acquisition they will most definitely do some serious damage to competitors in the mobile gaming market.
