If you haven’t quite caught on, no one has really attached a version number to the Gingerbread. Google has never commented on what the next version number will be after 2.2. We’ve seen speculation ranging anywhere from 2.5 to 3.0. Now, a new piece of evidence has surfaced. A post/reply in a threaded discussion from a Google employee/rep referring to Android 2.3 as a “major release.”
On the other hand, despite being such a straight-forward statement, this doesn’t guarantee that this is the version number for Gingerbread. Looking at the version history, 2.0 was dubbed “Eclair” and the next release 2.1 was considered a major release but did not have a new codename assigned to it.
In a lot of instances, version numbers don’t mean much, however, most people consider such a small increase in the version number means a small update in the feature-set compared to a jump to 2.5 or 3.0.
When it is all said and done, it all falls into the hands of the software team and subject to their naming convention. Technology can change drastically in a very short period of time, but for now, this is the most recent, sound piece of evidence pointing to a version number for Gingerbread.
