Leap Wireless is planning on selling a 7″ Android 2.2 tablet in the first half of next year, said Matt Stoiber, VP and general manager of device development at Leap. He didn’t want to provide any details about pricing, but he did say that the device will come with pre-paid voice and data services.
Stoiber is expecting that tablets will expand their smartphone markets, pointing to the success that Apple’s iPad has had so far. He also said the Huawei has become a major supplier to the carrier, with one of the world’s cheapest Android smartphones that actually look good, coming from Huawei. The handset is called Ascend and it will sell for only $150.
Leap wants to sell great cheap Android smartphones and tablets because they think they will help their pre-paid services become more popular.
