The DROID franchise is not going to be dying anytime soon, at least according to Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha. He said this in a conference call with investors about the recent quarter’s earnings.
As most people know the strongest time of the year to sell smartphones is the time coming up with the holiday season. During the call, Mr. Jha said he expects Motorola to sell close to 14 million smartphones this year, if that is correct that means that Motorola will have to sell 5 million in the coming 4th quarter.
During the same call he also said that even though in early 2011 they will experience a stronger competition selling phones for Big Red (you can possibly read this as the iPhone coming to Verizon), but at the same time they will “continue to invest in the DROID franchise”.
There were also mentions of their Android-powered tablet (Stingray) that has been rumored to be in the works.
All in all, it is nice to see that the brand that truly helped get us to the point that we are at with Android will continue and that they aren’t just going to give up on the franchise just because of the perennial iPhone on Verizon rumors, which they are just that — rumors.
