Now we’re going to have to start reading a little more carefully. Virgin Mobile will be launching a new Samsung Android phone, and it sure sounds familiar. Are you ready for… the Samsung Galaxy 5. Not Galaxy S, Galaxy 5. In other parts of the world, this phone is called the Samsung i5503 or i5500, or the Samsung Corby, which is certainly a lot less confusing.
Virgin’s got a new plan called Supertab, and several phones on that plan end up costing nothing, including this one.
This phone is no Galaxy S, but here’s what it’s packing: Android OS 2.1 (Eclair), Samsung’s TouchWiz 3.0 user interface, a 2.8 inch touchscreen with 240 x 320 resolution, a 600 MHz CPU, a 2 megapixel camera, WiFi 802.11 b/g, A-GPS, Bluetooth 2.1, a 1200 mAh battery, the usual 3.5 mm headset jack, and up to 16 Gb storage on a microSD card.
The low-end phone is supposedly capable of Android OS 2.2 (Froyo) but no schedule for an update has been given. It is capable of global roaming as it is quad-band.
The Galaxy 5 will be exclusive to Virgin Mobile in Canada.
