World Round Up: Android Ascends in Europe – Feral Mascots in Oz – Viewpad 7 Generating Big Buzz in UK

Czech Mate
By far the biggest mobile operating system worldwide is still Symbian. Not because it’s the best but because its been around for so long and, let’s face it, we’ve all owned a Nokia at some point in our lives.

Experts have anticipated that it could be years before more modern OS’s can get even close to the sheer numbers of Symbian handsets out there, but not so in the Czech Republic where Android outsold all other systems in September, including Symbian. A sign of things to come no doubt but the real change will happen when we see this shift in bigger markets, particularly in Europe where Symbian still has a powerful hold.

Bizarre Promo Down Under
Would the sight of this life-size red android wandering around your neighborhood make you more, or less, likely to throw away your iPhone in disgust and trot off to buy the latest Android handset? Vodafone Australia seem to think it can only further Android sales and have released three of theses little fellas onto the streets of Sydney in a bizarre publicity campaign. Truth is… Australians already have taken to Android in their droves and the only thing the sight of this chap will get people to chuck away will be those tinnies of lager – along with a curse of “Never again!”

Viewpad 7 excitement grows
With just over two weeks before release, pre-orders in the UK for Viewsonic’s Viewpad 7 are pouring in to online retailer Misco’s servers. And at £400 ($635) one can see why and the Viewpad 7 is being dubbed the poor man’s Galaxy Tab and its easy to see why.

I was surprised not to be able to find the product on eXpansys’ shelves as they are normally first off the mark but no doubt it’ll be available from them too before long.
