Market research company NPD has just posted a new report showing how quickly Android is rising above its main rivals BlackBerry and Apple. Take a look at the graph above and you can see that in 3Q 2009 Android was sitting at only 3% of smartphone sales in the US, while RIM’s BlackBerry was far above and beyond with 46% sales, and Apple stuck in the middle with 29%.
Now look at the difference the past year has made. Andoid OS now has 44% of sales, thats a positive change of 41%, amazing! BlackBerry has fallen way behind with only 22% of sales in the US. According to the data, Android sales have nearly doubled that of Apple who is now down to 23%.
It looks like Android is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with, but Apple and RIM are still hanging in their with the most popular individual smartphone sales. The battle of the operating systems will keep rumbling on, maybe with a new competitor entering the ring in the form of the Windows Phone 7. From the numbers above I think its safe to say that whoever the fight might be with, Android is going to keep pushing forward with skyrocketing sales.
