Motorola does not have a very good reputation for sending timely updates to their phones and this time is no exception. Motorola has published a list of all the Android phones out right now, and when and if they are expected to be updated to the latest firmware version. The European Motorola Defy was scheduled to receive an update by this year’s time but according to the list, Defy won’t be getting Froyo (Android 2.2) until Q2 2011!!
To get an idea of what we are dealing with, Froyo was released in May of this year and Gingerbread (Android 2.3) may be announced in the following weeks. Getting Froyo in Q2 will make it nearly a year after it was released. Meanwhile, other phones will be coming out with 2.3. To make matters worse, Google I/O will be in January revealing whatever new upgrades will be coming to the platform. Expect an angry mob of people.
But no mob could be madder than those folks holding a phone that will NOT be updated. And while some (Devour) won’t be updated beyond 1.5/1.6, other phones (Cliq) are barely getting Android 2.1 and there is probably no chance they will move up from there. There is no word on whether the U.S. version of the Defy on T-Mobile’s network will be receiving Android 2.2.
