Looks like NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang is at it again. He never has had a problem letting his opinion be known and this time he takes aim at Android tablets and the Galaxy Tab to be specific. The current selection of tablets and those to come soon do not impress Jen-Hsun Huang. He’s calling the Galaxy Tab simply “a large phone,” a statement that isn’t completely untrue. Android 2.1 and 2.2 are not optimized for tablets by Google’s own admission. It’s the same Android as your smartphone, just stretched to fit the larger resolution of the tablet.
Why all the news around Huang and Android tablets? NVIDIA did just release their 2011 road-map which does seem to lean towards a Tegra 2 tablet. Also, by the time the Tegra 2 tablet is released, Google should have Honeycomb or Ice Cream, both Android OSes more suited to the tablet scene.
So, did Samsung and other tablet makers jump the gun, or is Huang being overly critical of current tablets to drum up interest in their tablet? In my opinion, it’s a little of both. Should tablet makers have waited a little longer for an Android OS that was tailored more for tablets? Definitely; though the Galaxy Tab is an awesome product, Android 2.2 has shown to be a little buggy on the large screen. Applications do not necessarily work on tablets because they work on your phone. Is Huang making stabs for media attention? Very much so. Steve Jobs does it all the time. Something new is coming out so I’ll make a few comments to get them all talking and looking our way. What do you have to say about the situation? Own a Galaxy Tab? Comment below please.
