The Financial Times last month reported that HTC would be opening their own smartphone app store. Fresh job postings on the HTC website appear to substantiate this rumor. Initially it was reported that HTC’s app store would include staff from Taiwan, but currently their job site includes a considerable number of U.S. openings focused on e-commerce.
HTC first posted the U.S. jobs to their website, but soon included them in popular job sites like CareerBuilder. Some of these job titles include, Senior Specialist for Content Management System, Senior E-Commerce Manger, and Online Merchandising Manager. HTC said it is “growing very fast and we are hiring for a variety of positions including marketers, developers, technical writers and many others. We are always exploring new areas we can add value to our customers, but we can’t comment on our future plans.”
A person close to HTC stated the store would sell e-books, magazines and applications. HTC already sells smartphones and accessories on their website, so I wouldn’t be shocked to see them sell these in the app store as well.
Hardware manufacturers and mobile carriers have already launched their own app stores, so expect the tendency towards this to continue. Imagine your Android phone with virtually three different app stores, your carrier, your phone’s manufacturer as well as the Android Market. More choice, more apps…who’s complaining? The more apps the better.
