HTC Legend Getting the Long Awaited Android 2.2 Update Today

It almost seems unreal, but after a long, long wait for HTC Legend owners (myself included), we will be finally treated with an Android 2.2 update, just in time before Android 2.3 is out. Still HTC deserves some credit, as a phone from this category, spec wise, would probably be overlooked in a second by other companies.  I’m thinking of  Samsung, who are taking this long just to update thir very best and most popular model – the Galaxy S.

So here we are, HTC is going to start rolling out the Android 2.2 update today in Europe, starting with UK. They’ve already sent a firmware update – build 2.05.405.2 – which fixed some more bugs and it’s probably preparing the phones for the Android 2.2 update. If you are still waiting for the 2.05.405.2 build, go to Settings > About phone > System software updates on your Legend and select the Check now button.

That being said, I’ve already decided a while ago that as soon as stock Android 2.2 is coming to my phone, I’m going to back it up (so when I go back I have the latest Android 2.2 version) and then use Cyanogen Mod 6.1. That, by the way, just got stable 2 days ago!

I figured the Android 2.2 update is the last version of Android that the HTC Legend will get.  So I’ll have to jump ship to the Cyanogen Mod eventually anyway to get a taste of Gingerbread, and perhaps even Honeycomb and other future versions if thy decide to continue supporting it. Plus, CM 6.1 has even more performance optimizations than stock Android 2.2, so it should make HTC Legend even faster – and I believe it needs all the extra speed it can get.
