Office Depot has now put their face back on the map in the mobile technology world by offering the Android-powered ViewSonic G tablet. The tablet is packing a punch almost as noteworthy as the fact that Office Depot will be providing this device.
The tablet is powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor which boasts some eye-opening scores on benchmarks. Look for more of these to pop up early in 2011.
Reminiscent of the Apple iPad, the ViewSonic G tablet is equipped with a 10-inch screen, likely to provide full 1080p HD video playback and a resolution up to 1024 x 600.
Another popular feature taking over the mobile phone/tablet market is the front-facing camera. The G tablet will support this as well our old favorites you would expect; Bluetooth, WiFi (yes, it includes 802.11n), a microSD slot and USB connectivity. While we are on the topic of storage, the device is said to have 16GB of internal storage and 512mb of RAM.
This is an Android 2.2 (Froyo) device. Google has expressed that Froyo isn’t optimized for tablets but with other devices like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, it has proven to be pretty solid.
Lots of you may be surprised that ViewSonic is even entering this area of mobile computing as the company is best known for high-quality monitors. Rest assured that after a little research of your own, you will see that other tablets manufactured by ViewSonic, you will find reviews and recommendations to put your fears at ease.
One of the biggest things to brag about with the ViewSonic G tablet is that it is expected to cost $399 from Office Depot. Compared to the iPad, you’re saving yourself nearly $100.
It certainly sounds like a great device and we certainly have no reason to believe otherwise. However, with CES right around the corner, things are expected to heat up with a pure onslaught of new devices sport dual-core processors. This should give you plenty of options to choose from as competition emerges.
