Google TV from ARM-Based STBs: $100

Are you looking for a much cheaper STB (set-top box) processor option to Intel’s CE4100 media chipset currently in Logitech’s Revue (priced at $299)? Well, your wait may soon be over, as a source at Google has confirmed that ARM-based Google TV STBs are soon to arrive.

The price is expected to be about $100 as compared to the $299 price of  Revue, which is the cheapest option available at present to receive Google TV service. The source revealed that Google has been in talks with ARM since November 2010, but it wasn’t mentioned whether ARM is meant to replace Intel, or exist side by side.

You can get a Sony Blu-ray player combined with Google TV, or purchase one of two Vizio HDTV-blended Google TV sets just announced at CES 2011, but these are more expensive, and are combined with other technologies that you may not wish to purchase.

It’s questionable whether the cheaper $100 ARM-based device could provide 1080p/60fps, or be limited to around 720/30fps. The latter just may be sufficient for many Google TV viewers, due to the restrictions of home broadband connections.
