The LG Optimus 2X and the Motorola Atrix 4G are the first of the next Gen Tegra 2 Dual Core Superphones to make it to the market. They both pack a serious punch and take smartphones to levels of performance and capabilities never before seen. The question at hand: which one deserves the crown?
Fit and Finish
Both phones are slimmer and leaner then last year’s heavyweights, with the Atrix having a slight advantage at 10.1 mm to the Optimus 2x which comes in at 10.9 mm. In terms of overall quality and in hand feel the advantage goes to Motorola and the Atrix, keeping inline with the high build quality of the Droid X. Another carryover from the X is the use of Gorilla Glass, giving the Atrix the toughness and scratch resistance that comes with it.
Software
Android 2.3 Gingerbread was released last month along with the Nexus S, but as yet that is still the only phone to feature the official version. Both phones will ship with Froyo Android 2.2 and an update to Gingerbread is promised in the future. As for Motorola they have a good track record when it comes to delivering updates to their phones long after release. Hopefully LG goes down the same path and doesn’t cause a Samsung-like debacle.
Camera
For some reason Motorola decided to revert back to a 5 megapixel after featuring an 8 megapixel in their previous flagship device. This gives the LG Optimus 2x the advantage as it comes with an 8 megapixel sensor. The LG also has an advantage over every other smartphone as it will be the first device with the ability to shoot 1080p video which should be a treat.
Display
Phone displays are getting larger, there is no doubt about it, what was big before as in the 3.5 inch screen on the iPhone no longer cuts it. 4 inches has become the minimum standard for high end devices and both of these phones feature identical sized 4 inch displays.
They both use TFT LCD displays but, the screens are not equal. The LG Optimus 2X’s screen boasts 384,000 pixels, the Motorola Atrix offers a massive 518,400. The Atrix display is 960 x 540 and Optimus 2x is 854 x 480. The Motorola screen will be sharper and more detailed as it has what is called qHD display.
Under the Hood
It would appear that the two would be evenly matched as both feature the 1 GHz Dual Core Tegra 2. However, the Atrix has an ace up its sleeve in the form of a full 1 GB of RAM while the Optimus 2X has 512MB. While 512 MB is the current standard and is certainly adequate, in order to keep the new processor supplied and take its performance to its full potential the extra memory will certaintly be the difference. Expect the Atrix to be an overall snappier and smoother experience.
Storage
Storage capacity is another victory for the Atrix as it comes with a built-in 16 GB to the Optimus 2X’s 8 GB. They both havemicroSD slots that can hold 32 GB cards so the Atrix will always have an 8GB advantage.
Media Playback
These devices both feature HDMI output along with DLNA capabilities allowing you to connect them to your home HD display.
At present, we don’t know of any additional video capabilities of the LG Optimus 2X beyond the Android standards of MP4, H.263 and H.264, but Motorola says that the Atrix will also be able to handle XviD and DivX files out of the box. This is a major win if you’re a fan of downloading vids off the net, to watch on-the-go. Both can handle 1080p video, but with more codec support, the Atrix is the best bet as a mobile media player.
Conclusion
Both the LG Optimus 2X and the Motorola Atrix will be powerful devices and will handle anything you can throw at them with relative ease. That does not mean that one is not the better device. As of right now and until review units are given out, the Motorola Atrix take the crown and is most definitely and powerhouse on the Spec Sheet. Motorola is in the game to win, they had the crown in the Droid X and just win you think someone else is going to take it from them they decide to flex their muscle.
