NVIDIA Develops Skype HD Video Calling for Android

With the help of the recently released SkypeKit, NVIDIA has released an HD video calling platform that utilizes the Tegra 2 video processing capabilities.  At the NVIDIA’s CES 2011 press conference, a demonstration was made using an Android tablet and promising to make it available for cross-platform use. NVIDIA stated that:

“We are excited that NVIDIA has leveraged SkypeKit to build a reference implementation of HD video calling on Android Tablets. In the near future, consumers will be able to make video calls from their Tegra-powered Tablets to anyone else using Skype, whether it’s on a PC, Mac, TVs, or phones.” Manrique Brenes, Director of Business Development at Skype.”

This means that laptops with HD webcams can now hold an HD video call with Tegra 2 based phone or tablet. Currently, only iPhone has the ability to do Skype video calls while Android can only do audio calls. Skype has yet to comment on whether they plan to release an app or if they are leaving it up to the manufacturer to develop their own app.
