Engadget has gotten up close and personal with the Xperia Play (the Playstation Phone). Engross yourself in all the details of this phone, and be sure to watch the video. It appears this phone may be a big winner!
Here’s what Engadget had to say:
Hardware: 4 inch multi-touch 854 x 480 LCD, the same as the x10, and looks great at all viewing angles, the screen is powered by Bravia engine for improved video playback. No word yet if its powered by Qualcomm MSM8655 chipset, clocking indicates 122.88MHz to 1GHz paired with Adreno 205 GPU, 512 MB of RAM, 1,689 on Quadrant, 59fps on Neocore, WiFi not working, possibly because this is not yet a fully functional device they have.
It has the regular 4 Android buttons, physical buttons below the screen, an power button in top right, a volume rocker is between the two game triggers on the right, the battery door seems flimsy. It has a 1500 m Amp battery, a SIM card and micro-SD slot, a second microphone above the LED flash, and stereo loudspeakers beside the USB port. It has all the customary PlayStation controls, same buttons except extra set above, and touch-pads in place of dual-shock joysticks.
Software: This is a bit better experience compared to the x10, and the modified user interface makes for speedy browsing. Engadget installed some emulators (one PlayStation, one Gameboy Advance) that ran fairly well, and everything is working.
Camera: It seems to be really terrific. It may have a bit too much red in some of the images they took, but third party apps could easily cure this. It’s 8 megapixels, which is excellent compared to what other smartphones have.
Overall Impression: Engadget found much allure to the game pad, and really enjoyed the device. The unknown cost and distribution of the games, and unknown cost for the phone, are questions that must be answered before they can give their final conclusion on the phone.
I’m not a PlayStation user, so we’ll have to wait till the die-hard players get their hands on Xperia Play to hear their impressions. Now for the video.
