Well, here we are once again having to address the Internet rumor mill. Once a rumor starts it builds and builds till its either verified as fact, or someone at the top relays that the rumor simply isn’t true. The latter is the case here, when Android Open Source & Compatibility Program Manager, Dan Morrill was compelled to ‘tweet’ regarding rumors of minimum hardware requirements needed to run Honeycomb. The rumors eventually got so bizarre with things like needing dual core processor, and an ultra high-resolution screen. His ‘tweet’ was simple, but loud and clear: “dejavu Random note: there’s no hard minimum processor requirement for Honeycomb. Trust me, if there were I’d know.”
Now we know that’s not true, what is true is the huge majority of tablets being introduced at CES 2011 share similar specs, which may be what got this rumor started. What these tablets have in common are NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 chip, which has a set of 1 GHz ARM Cortex A9 processors, a wicked fast graphics processor, and the same 1280×800 pixel touchscreen. Let’s face it folks, all these tablets are competing for your business, so they have to measure up. 2011 is being called the ‘year of the tablet’, and with so many to choices, folks are gonna do their research to get the best bang for their buck.
What we were all hoping for at CES 2011 was a release date for these tablets, but that has been one major thing lacking, as well as a price tag. I know 2011 will be my year to purchase a tablet, and I know I’ll be doing my research.
