It looks like dual core smartphones are all the rage. We’ve been hearing a lot about great new Android devices that will sport these super powerful processors, but we’re still waiting around for them to show up. I’m sure with Mobile World Congress taking the spotlight next week we will see plenty of these in action, just giving us more reason to hold on just a little bit longer for an upgrade. Lets take a look at what’s rumored to be heading our way in the coming months ahead.
- The Motorola Atrix 4G heading to AT&T, gets a pre-sale this weekend, and is supposed to be in stores on March 3rd. This beast of a smartphone will be powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra 2, and so far looks extremely promising.
- HTC is rumored to be working on a dual core device called “Pyramid”, which is said to be heading our way towards June.
- Qualcomm will be unleashing their dual core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon, said to show up sometime in Q2, and a dual core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon set for Q4.
- Samsung‘s dual core Orion was supposed to drop in Q4 2010, but new rumors have it pegged with a Q2 2011 release, possibly powering the Galaxy S 2, which might make an appearance at MWC.
- Samsung also is said to be working on the dual core processor “Hercules” and a quad core “Aquila.”
- From Texas Instruments comes the OMAP4 dual core processor, a 1 GHz expected in the first half of this year, followed by a 1.5 GHz version due in the second half of the year.
- Expected to be shown at Mobile World Congress will be the LG Optimus 3D, which is rumored to house the OMAP4.
So that’s where we’re going, but when will we get there?
It would be nice for the Android community to get our hands on some dual core smartphones before the year is out. Especially considering that by next year this will be old tech and we will have moved on to bigger and better processors, with NVIDIA leading the pack most likely. Hopefully MWC will shed some light on what we can expect, and more importantly when to expect some of these processors to make it into our pockets.
