Android users can Plex their muscles with New Media Server App

Plex, another popular application running on another platform has landed in the Android Market. If you haven’t heard of Plex then let me run through it with you. This impressive app lets you browse and play video, music and photos straight to you Android phone which is streamed from the Plex media server that you download to your PC,MAC or Laptop. Media is available from the likes of CNET,CNN,CBS Sports and many more. If you have a MAC you are able to stream additional content from iPhoto and iTunes.

Their are plenty of unofficial apps in the Market but it’s always good to have the official one as you will get better support and help if things go wrong. Plex also offer a Forum where you can discuss all things Plex and a Wiki page where you can get the full rubdown on requirements and ‘how to’

To get started first you will need to part with $4.99 / £3.09 and have the following:

– Plex Media Server, which is available for free at Plex.com
– Any device running Android 1.6 or higher.
– To access your media remotely you must configure port forwarding on your router – for instructions visit: here

Before you rush off and download it you need to be running Android 1.6 and up, if you’re not it isn’t going to work and any DRM protected content ie anything from older versions of iTunes audio or video, won’t work either nor will playback of VIDEO_TS/.ISO video.

Plex do advise that they expect a few issues with the amount of Android powered handsets out there and that is quite refreshing to hear from a Developer that there may be issues, one of the other advantages of an official application.  Download it now via your phone, or head on over to the Android Market

Enjoy!
