The Dell Venue is Dell’s latest attempt at joining the big boys at the Android superphone party. It looks like its a step in the right direction. Chris Burns of Slashgear/Androidcommunity got some hands-on time at MWC.
This device is fascinating because it comes in all the flavors you might want. There are 8 and 16 GB variations. You get the choice of 850/1900/2100 or 900/AWS/2100 3G (download 7.2 Mbps/upload 5.76 Mbps). This means that most GSM carriers (or their customers) in the world can utilize this phone. It comes with a 4.1 inch AMOLED display, and a 8 MP camera with flash and dedicated camera button. There is also a new generation Qualcomm Snapdragon processor clocked at 1GHz, meaning that it is plenty fast.
Rather than stock Android 2.2, it comes with Dell’s new overlay, Dell Stage, which looks somewhat interesting although not particularly special.
Frankly, I think its styling looks nice. So aside from being functional (hopefully), it will also be aesthetically pleasing.
In the video, Chris Burns asks about an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The Dell booth-man tries to skirt around the issue but basically says that such an update is likely.
While we hadn’t heard this before, it seems that if you go to www.dell.com/venue you can view the product page now. It does not seem that it is quite ready for ordering, as it will not load your checkout page if you click “order.”
