During an event at MWC, Chief Executive Officer for Motrola Mobility Sanjay Jha let some information slip. Google is preparing for an all-out war against Apple’s iTunes music service by launching their own Google Music service, starting with Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). There have been rumors for some time that Google has been preparing to take on iTunes, as shown in their purchase of Simplify Media. Learning it will be featured in Honeycomb means it will finally be available in the near future.
This corresponds with recent reports where Billboard magazine reported that Google’s VP of Engineering had been quietly contacting music executives about the new music service and promised an online store and service. The Google VP has also mentioned that there will be a desktop application to go along with remote access to music and “unprotected” films on Android phones and tablets.
Google definately is facing an uphill battle with iTunes and Amazon already staking claim to the music service market. After all, Apple just recently sold their ten billionth music download through iTunes. If Google incorporates the Cloud and allows you to have access to your complete library from your mobile device as they have demoed, then they will definitely have a place in the Music Service market. I for one would love to have that service tied into my Google account. Do you guys think Google can succeed in the music business?
