One of the downsides to purchasing the Motorola Xoom tablet was the requirement you to get their data plan, at least for a month. This requirement has now supposedly been removed by the carrier and allows customers to buy the Xoom without any contract or data plan. Before, the customers were required to pay a $20 initial charge for the data plan after an activation fee of $35. The 3G service could be cancelled after a month, but would have already cost you a useless $55 in carrier fees.
Apparently, someone at Verizon spoke to Computerworld about this new policy. According to Computerworld, the charge associated with the Xoom would be refunded if purchased before the policy. There is no press release or update from the carrier regarding this change.
At present, Verizon allows you to buy the tablet for $599 for a two-year contract with activation and data plan charges. At Best Buy, the Motorola Xoom is available for purchase with the old policy still there. The retailer has yet to update its website to reflect Verizon’s less-restrictive policy.
