Nielsen Reports U.S. Smartphone Market Statistics
The Nielsen Company has recently published a new report with findings that indicate that Google’s Android platform now holds the largest share of the U.S. smartphone market, with a total share of 29 percent. In comparison, RIM’s BlackBerry OS and Apple’s iOS own 27 percent of the market each.
Who’s Winning the Smartphone Battle? Well, That Depends…
According to Nielsen’s report, deciding who is winning is a matter of perspective. Do you look at what Operating Systems are running, or do you look at the manufacturer? Google licenses their OS to companies like HTC, Motorola and Samsung. Therefore, Google is turning a profit solely based on the OS, but not on the hardware it is running on. However, RIM and Apple’s operating systems are turning a profit on two fronts: the OS itself, and the hardware as well. The report explains that if you look at the analysis by manufacturer, it “shows RIM and Apple to be the winners compared to other device makers since they are the only ones creating and selling smartphones with their respective operating systems.”
The Youngsters Know What’s Cool: Android Smartphones!
Also included in the report was a breakdown of age demographics per OS, comparing Android, BlackBerry, and iOS markets to the age of the users. As it turns out, younger people (ages 18-24) tend to go for Android while older users tend to go for the other two. We would like to hear your input on this! Who do you think is winning the battle? Post a comment and let us know who you think will have smartphone domination!
