First Look: Official CNN App Finally Arrives

While there has been a few unofficial CNN apps available in Android Market, this is the first release of the official CNN Headlines version. It was released on 4/18  and with the high quality presentation it has become the news app that sets the bar that other news apps will be judged by. If you previewed the CNN app on Honeycomb, then you will be right at home with this phone version.

The top navigation bar contains all of  the usual categories including US, World, Politics, Justice, Entertainment, Tech and more. Each category displays the 10 latest stories and while the list is peppered with ads after every fourth story they aren’t overly distracting. You can access and view CNN videos in all of the same categories available the CNN homepage.

The app features access to the iReport section of the CNN website in which you can view featured photos and videos, as well as participate in Assignments or submit your own photo or video report. You can also connect to your Facebook and Twitter accounts to share stories, photos and videos.

The clean and engaging look of this app combined with the exhaustive access to stories, audio and video segments makes this the news app to beat. The app did perform well overall, but I did experience a few force close issues as I was sampling the app hopefully a bug fix is on the way.
