HSUPA Update Spotted In The Wild?

There’s been quite a buzz in the XDA forums about a possible update to the Motorola Atrix 4G on AT&T, which appears to finally activate its HSUPA capability. Nate2569, a user in the forum, claims to have received two previously unknown updates to his Atrix.

We’ve been waiting for AT&T to unlock HSUPA on the Atrix since AT&T admitted that they had, in fact, throttled (read: disabled) HSUPA (High-Speed Uplink Packet Access – that’s the upload portion of its super-fast connectivity), and promised to turn it on in April.

Nate2569’s claim (still unverified at time of writing) is that he received an update on his Atrix which brought his phone to Version.4.1.75.MB860.ATT.en.US, and also updated his Android version from 2.2.1 (which most Atrix owners have) to 2.2.2. Not long after this, he says, he received another update to 4.1.83. After this he ran a speed test and posted the results: 2.9Mbps down and 1.6Mbps up. (See his screen capture below).

This would seem to suggest that AT&T is finally getting ready to activate HSUPA as promised, though no one else has seen this yet. It appears that the user who received the updates has a developer or tester’s version of the phone, and this may be the reason he got an early release of the update.
