Corning has quickly become the leader in resistant screens for smartphones ever since the Droid smartphones and the iPhone 4 started using Gorilla Glass as their screens. Now just about every high-end smartphone has it, and for good reason. It’s a screen that is very resistant to scratches. In fact it’s so resistant that even if you use a knife or keys against the screen, it won’t scratch at all. Of course, if you want to hit it with a hammer, you’ll still probably brake it to pieces, but I’m assuming most people won’t accidentally do that to their phones.

Corning is getting ready for a big announcement on January 9th at CES, where they will demo their next-gen Gorilla Glass screen. The VP of Corning says the new screen will “enable broader touch technology penetration”. He also said people at CES will be able to have a little fun with it:

As we did last year, we’ll provide consumers and customers visiting the Corning booth the opportunity to test first-hand the outstanding damage resistance and flexibility of this industry-leading, ultra-thin, and tough specialty glass.

He also said that the Gorilla Glass will start entering new markets and be used for other types of devices as well:

  • An 82-inch advanced multi-touch LCD display prototype featuring Corning Gorilla Glass as a durable, touch-sensitive, and elegant cover glass.
  • Touch-enabled automobile interior and home appliance center simulators demonstrating the enhanced user interface experience that thin, durable glass can enable in new design applications.
  • A centerpiece, Gorilla Glass-covered video wall, flanked by Gorilla Glass fabricated sound speakers, projecting the latest in Corning specialty glass technology news.
Clearly, this is just the beginning for Corning and its Gorilla Glass, as the world becomes more and more surrounded by touchscreens everywhere.
