The latest rumor says the Samsung Galaxy S 3 might arrive as early as March 13, at least in Turkey, according to this rumor. Could this be happening so soon? And should Samsung release it this year?
I do believe it’s possible the Galay S 3 could land in the market as early as March 13. After all, it’s just 2 months earlier compared to when the Galaxy S 2 was launched, which also landed about 1.5 months before the original Galaxy S was launched. I’m just talking about the months here, because obviously they came almost a year after each other. So it’s very possible that they could release it this year, but should they?
If it’s going to be released in March, then it will most likely have the Exynos 4412, which is a quad core processor, most likely with 1.5 Ghz per core, and with the Mali 400 GPU, but with a 50% improvement in performance. This would be quite a significant improvement over the Galaxy S 2, but now that the Exynos 5250 with Cortex A15 and the Mali T604 are rumored to appear in the next gen Galaxy Tab, then I find it a little disappointing that the next Galaxy S 3 won’t have the same chip, too.
The truth is we don’t know much about the battery efficiency of Cortex A15, and ARM has actually focused on performance rather than battery efficiency when they created the Cortex A15. That doesn’t mean they completely disregarded battery efficiency, just that they weren’t as strict about it as for their other chips, like Cortex A9, so they can really boost performance and be able to compete with Intel’s lower-end chips.
Maybe this is why Cortex A15 will first appear in Samsung’s next gen tablet, rather than their next gen flagship phone. To be honest, if the battery really is hit more than with a quad core Cortex A9 chip, perhaps it’s better to wait for the much more efficient Cortex A7 to be combined with Cortex A15 for maximum performance only when you most need it and battery efficiency for the other 70% of the time.
Still, the Galaxy S 3 landing in March is just a rumor for now, but we should be getting more hints about when it’s going to appear at MWC.
