Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Tab 2, which is supposed to be the next-generation Galaxy Tab (remember that 7″ one from 2010?). The problem is, it fails to excite, and it’s not even competitive in today’s marketplace of $200 Kindles and $79 Ainaol Novo7 tablets. The Galaxy Tab 2 specs include:
- 1 GHz dual-core processor
- 1 GB of RAM with options for 8, 16, and 32 GB of internal memory
- MicroSD card slot for memory expansion
- 7-inch; 1024 x 600 resolution
- 3 megapixel fixed focus rear camera; VGA front camera
- Bluetooth 3.0; GPS; HSPA+ support (on 3G model); Wi-Fi
- 4000 mAh battery
- Android 4.0
As you can besides the dual core processor and 2 low resolution cameras, barely anything has changed spec wise. And yet they say that the tablet will start at 350 euro, which probably get translated to a $350 or $400 price in US. The problem is those are pretty much the same specs of the Kindle, and there will be even more powerful tablets out soon, like the Asus Memo which will cost $250 and have a quad core processor and a 1280×800 resolution.
The tablet does come with Android 4.0, but that shouldn’t be part of the cost of the tablet, because Android 4.0 was launched months ago, so to them it should make no difference which Android version they are using – they are just using the last one available. Also, the original Tab should still be able to get Android 4.0, because it hasn’t even been 18 months since the first one was released, and according to the Update Alliance they were supposed to form, the original Galaxy Tab should get the ICS update.
Bottom line, this tablet release seems very disappointing, especially for that price. Watch the whole presentation below:
