This is not the first version of the Galaxy Beam, with its main selling point being a projector. In fact the first one got a little popular when it helped the Chilean miners receive some messages of encouragement through it. The projector in the first version was very basic with only 6 lumens of brightness, but this new version promises 15 lumens and a high definition image that can be projected up to 50 feet high.
Another main feature of this phone is a dual core 1 Ghz processor now, which starting with this MWC will look a lot more mainstream and mid-range in the near future, when all the quad core, dual core Krait and 1.8-2 Ghz dual core phones appear. The display will be 4″ and have a resolution of 800×480, which also seems to be going mid-range already. Unfortunately, the version of the OS is still Android 2.3, but I’d expect it to at least get Android 4.0 by the end of the year. Clearly, Samsung will not consider it a top priority for an update.
The battery of the phone will be 2000 mAh, which is a little high for a phone in this range, but it’s most likely because the projector will consume a lot of energy while in use, so it’s good to have as big of a battery as possible. Of course it could also be because of the latest trend of putting batteries that are a lot bigger, like for example, the 3300 mAh one in Droid Razr MAXX.
I’m really hoping such batteries will become standard in the very near future, at least for the flagship phones, but in the end I’m hoping all smartphones will feature 3000+ mAh batteries. That combined with the increase efficiency that the manufacturers are able to achieve through other means, should give our devices much longer use.
