Featured: Amazon Rumoured to Enter Smartphone Arena?

If you were Amazon – you know, that mega corporation you pour your hours and money into – what would be the next big thing that you do? Well, bring a Smartphone to market, of course! That’s just what Wired think their next move is.

It’d certainly make sense as well, after all, Amazon is one of the few companies – besides Apple – that can offer everything you’d consume on a smartphone. They’ve got the killer Kindle store, a heavily curated app store, the online shopping business where you can buy practically anything and last but not least they also have a music store and a movie/TV streaming platform. Seems like a pretty complete list of essentials for an ecosystem these days, right? Whilst they might not offer you an e-mail address quite like Google does, I doubt that it’d be difficult for the online giant to bring us something like this before too long, though.

The smartphone move looks even more likely seeing as Amazon already have a heavily modified version of Gingerbread running on their Kindle Fire tablet, laying the ground work for a software system that might easily scale to a handset – or even a few models. Amazon are unique in this field as they have the ability to push their phone and sell it a seriously cut rate – the Fire is literally dirt cheap at $199 for a quality tablet – along with massive advertising at one of the internet’s most visited sites Amazon.com that no other OEM could begin to match. I don’t think that Amazon would mind seeing figures like this on a smartphone now would they besides, they’re already running the Kindle app on millions of Android devices, why not let them be Amazon devices?
