There’s been rumors floating around the last several months about Samsung and Google working on a Nexus tablet. Not much information has been able to go on, but it appears that there’s even more to making the rumors true. Google’s own GIT repository is being updated and mirrored to their AOSP tree. In plain English, a new device is being worked on, however, the big question is what is being worked on?
From looking over and digging through the kernel commits, the device they’re working on together features Samsung’s Exynos 5250 dual-core Cortex-A15 processor, with Mali T-604 graphics clocked at up to 533mhz (codenamed vithar). Some of the other specs along with the Mali T-604 and Exynos 5250 are a 1280 x 800 resolution Samsung Super AMOLED display.
Given the dual-core 5250 processor, 1280 x 800 resolution, and only a 5 megapixel camera most likely this is some sort of Android tablet – possibly the Google Nexus Tablet we’ve been hearing rumors about.
Either way, Google’s developers conference, Google I/O, is in June so if this happens to be the Nexus tablet that has been rumored about, we’ll hear about it then. Samsung has provided the last two official Google phone’s, the Nexus S 4G and Galaxy Nexus so it’s not too surprising that they would be working on a tablet together. The tablet space, thanks to Android which has been sparked by the massive success of the iPad, is very diverse and has what some would say too many choices.
Being that some of the most successful smartphones and tablets have come from Samsung, if the Nexus tablet rumor is true, could be a big success, especially if the price is just right and has some differentiating factors.
