Motorola owners have been feeling the burn lately when it comes to official Ice Cream Sandwich updates. With promises of the software update coming to their devices officially all they could was sit and wait for a dated release. Well the time has finally come for Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX owners with a slated release of Q2 this year. Not to worry for owners of various other Motorola devices though as they will see the official ICS update begin to roll out later this year.
While Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX devices will begin to receive Ice Cream Sandwich starting in the next month or so, the Droid Bionic, Droid 4, Xyboard tablets, and Atrix 2 will all start to see a little ICS love around Q3 of this year. This also means that there is a sad bit of news for consumers using the Original Atrix, Droid 3 and Droid X2 as the list confirms that they will forever more be stuck on Android 2.3. While they will no longer receive future updates of software they will still continue to receive bug fix support as needed. And there is always the option of rooting your device and slapping on a custom ROM. (which in my opinion is the better way to go anyway. No bloatware, custom design, and more functionality.) This information comes as no surprise to me. Being the former user of a Samsung Galaxy S device I ran into this exact scenario and had to update my software manually through root and ROM.
I personally think this a tad bit of bad form on Motorola’s part, seeing as how some of the devices that won’t ever be getting official ICS updates are less than a year old.
