Featured: Top 10 Best Android Smartphones Rankings – May 2012

Ranked #1 – Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Previous Rank – #1

Comments: This phone lands at the top of the list for the second month in a row because, well, it’s the current Nexus device. If that’s not enough to convince you, look at the bright, colourful Super AMOLED display with its 1280 x 800 resolution – sharp, but not as sharp as it could be because it’s stretched over such a large screen. It’s powered by a dual-core 1.4GHz processor and has 16GB of onboard memory plus the microSD card slot for additional storage. The front facing 2MP camera has higher resolution than most,  and  the main 8MP camera takes beautiful photos. Currently running Ice Cream Sandwich, it’s hard to pass over the Galaxy Nexus if you’re in the mood to buy a new device.

Specs:

  • Network: HSPA+ 21Mbps/HSUPA 5.76Mbps 850/900/1900/1700/2100, EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900 Specifications above may differ on the LTE version.
  • Processor: 1.2 GHz Dual-core Processor (OMAP 4460)
  • Display: 4.65-inch 1280×720 HD Super AMOLED
  • OS: Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • Camera: 5MP AF with LED Flash , 1.3MP Front

Ranked #2 – HTC One X 4G

Previous Rank – Unranked, new release

Comments: Talk about making an entrance, the HTC One X hits our list at the #2 spot in its first month on the market, and many would argue that it should have been #1. The HTC One X is a beautiful departure from the tried and true but tired old designs that HTC is famous for. It’s a sleek, comfortable to hold device with a beautiful screen staring back at you. It does ship with ICS on board, but it’s stuck with the new HTC “thinner over battery life” 1800mAh non-removable battery. The One X has reviewed very well so far and if the battery doesn’t scare you off, this is a beautiful device to be stuck with for the life of your contract.

Specs:

  • Dimensions: 134.36 x 69.9 x 8.9 mm
  • 4.7-inch Super LCD2 capacitive touchscreen (720 x 1280)

  • Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • Sense 4.0

  • GPU: ULP GeForce
  • HTC ImageSense
  • 1GB RAM
  • 32GB built-in storage
  • 8-megapixel (rear) camera w/ AF and LED flash
  • 1.3-megapixel (front) camera
  • Non-removable 1800mAh battery

Ranked #3 – HTC One S

Previous Rank – Unranked, new release

Comments: Proving that hyping up a device works like a charm, the HTC One S stole the #3 ranking on our list this month. Aside from the letdown of a screen that HTC put in this device, it’s still the best phone that T-Mobile is selling right now. HTC’s ImageSense technology really seems to be working, as the images that I’ve seen from this device are beautiful. The One S, like the One X before it has reviewed really well and has a lot going for it. It’s just saddled with HTC Sense, a thinner profile thanks to the weak battery  and that previously mentioned underwhelming screen.

Specs:

  • Dimensions: 130.9 x 65 x 7.8mm
  • Weight: 119.5g
  • 4.3-inch Super AMOLED capacitive display (540 x 960)
  • HTC Sense v4.0
  • Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB built-in storage
  • Dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor
  • GPU: Adreno 225
  • Bluetooth v4.0 w/ A2DP
  • MicroUSB
  • Battery: 1650mAh
  • 8MP (rear) camera w/ AF and LED flash
  • 1.3MP (front) camera
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Beats audio

Ranked #4 – Samsung Galaxy Note

Previous Rank – #2

Comments: Falling 2 sports to the #4 ranking is the largest phone in the world. Just because it’s gigantic that doesn’t mean it isn’t a great device, because it is great.  The screen is bright and colourful thanks to the Super AMOLED technology and has a 1280 x 800 resolution – sharp but like the Nexus, not as sharp as it could be because it’s stretched over the large screen. It’s powered by a dual-core 1.4GHz processor and has 16GB of storage, plus a microSD card slot if you want more space. Again with the nice 2MP front camera and 8MP rear camera. It runs Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread with an Android 4 ICS update coming soon enough. Don’t make fun of that stylus, it’s really useful on this small tablet phone.

  • Display: 5.3″ WXGA(1280×800, 285 ppi) HD Super AMOLED
  • OS: Android 2.3(Gingerbread) with promise for 4.0 ICS
  • Camera : 8 MP with LED Flash Front : 2MP Front
  • Video : 1080p@24 ~ 30fps, Playing 1080p@30fps

Ranked #5 – Droid Razr Maxx

Previous Rank – #3

Comments: Also knocked down 2 spots by the HTC duo of phones is the Droid Razr Maxx. You really can’t grasp how great this device is unless you stroll into a Verizon store and hold one in your hand. It has a very unique style, and it’s a very nice phone to use.  It’s powered by a dual-core 1.4GHz processor and has 16GB of storage with a microSD slot in tow. The front 2MP camera is nice for video chat while the rear 8MP camera delivers very good quality photos. It runs Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread but an update to Android 4 ICS is in the works.

Ranked #6 – Galaxy SII

Previous Rank – #4

Comments: Another victim of the HTC onslaught, the Galaxy SII fell out of the top 5 this month. Some may not like this phone because of how similar it looks to other devices on the market, but even this old dog is still worthy of consideration. It has a bright, colorful 4.3″ Super AMOLED screen powered by dual core 1.2GHz Cortex A9 processor. Samsung devices have pretty much always been at the front of the image quality pack and the 8MP read shooter on this phone takes great pictures. It packs the standard 16GB of storage and throws in that microSD slot for additional space. Battery life on this phone isn’t bad and even though it might remind you of some other company’s phone, it’s still a winner.

Specs:

  • Network: HSPA+ 21Mbps/ HSUPA 5.76Mbps EDGE/ GPRS Class 12 Quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 Quad band UMTS 850/900/1900/2100

  • Camera: 8MP w/LED Flash, 2MP Front
  • Video: 1080p@30fps
  • Memory: 16GB storage, 1GB RAM
  • Size: 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5 mm and weighs 116g
  • Battery: 1650mAh

Ranked #7 – HTC Sensation

Previous Rank – #6

Comments: The Sensation may have slipped a spot from last month, but it did manage to leapfrog the LG Spectrum on its way to the #7 ranking this month. One remark in our in-house poll said “nothing sensational about this phone”, but it’s actually nothing less than another solid device from HTC. It also looks just like every other solid device from HTC. The 1.2GHz dual core processor is speedy, and the 768MB of RAM seems to be more than enough for this device. The 4.3″ S-LCD display actually comes in at an impressive 540×960 and a whopping 256ppi. It looks better in white than the standard HTC gray, but hey, this phone ships with a higher capacity battery than the HTC Thunderbolt did. If you can’t hold out for the new HTC One series of devices this phone will do quite nicely, thank you very much.

Specs:

  • Network: GSM 900/AWS/2100
  • Processor: Dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon
  • Display: 4.3-inch S-LCD capacitive touchscreen
  • OS: Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), Upgradeable to 4.0 ICS
  • Camera: 8MP w/LED Flash, 1. 2MP Front
  • Video: 1080p
  • Memory: 8GB storage, 768MB RAM
  • Size: 4.96×2.57×0.44 inches and weighs 5.22 ounces
  • Battery: 1520mAh

Ranked #8 – LG Spectrum 4G

Previous Rank – #5

Comments: The biggest loser in the HTC rush to the top this month was the poor LG Spectrum. All jokes aside, this is the best phone that LG has ever produced. The screen is impressively bright and colourful thanks to the Super AMOLED technology and it’s stretched 1280×800 resolution could be sharper, but is far from disappointing. It’s powered by a dual core 1.4GHz processor and has 16GB of storage plus that microSD card slot. The front camera is a 2MP video chat cam while the rear is a good quality 8MP. It runs Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread but an Android 4 ICS update has been announced.

Specs:

  • Network: CDMA 800 / 1900 . CDMA 2000 1xEV-DO / LTE 700 MHz Class 13

Ranked #9 – Motorola Droid 4

Previous Rank – Unranked

Comments: Coming out of nowhere to land in this month’s Top 10 list is the Motorola Droid 4, another device that suffered from a little bit of the Verizon release delay. The Droid 4 was a bit of an upgrade in the hardware department over the previous version, but the Droid 4 is just this side of evolutionary. All reliable mobile phones use high voltage batteries and quality mobile chargers .The processor is faster than the Droid 3 and it also offer 4G connectivity with double the RAM and a decent battery. At the same screen resolution and nearly identical form factor this design is getting a little long in the tooth.

Specs:

  • 1.2GHz dual-core TI OMAP4430 processor
  • 1GB of RAM
  • Android 2.3.5 (Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgradable in the future)
  • 4-inch qHD “scratch-and-scrape resistant” display with Gorilla glass
  • 16GB internal memory, up to 32 GB microSD card supported
  • Full 5-row LED edge-lit laser-cut QWERTY keyboard
  • 8MP rear shooter with 1080p HD video capture
  • 1.3MP 720p HD front-facing camera
  • 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi
  • 4G-LTE
  • 179g (6.31oz)
  • 2.8 (w) x 5.0 (h) x 0.5 (d) inches
  • CDMA 800, 1900 EVDO REV A/LTE B13 700

Ranked #10 – Galaxy Nexus S

Previous Rank – #9

Comments: The Galaxy Nexus S is the little phone that could remain in a 2012 top 10 list. Last month there was one voter in our in-house poll that put the Nexus S in their top 5, and that’s truly not a bad choice.  It might lack a little screen size and RAM of some of the other phones higher up on our list, but it’s a Nexus device and might be the first (and one of the few) 2010 devices to get an update to Android 4 ICS. If you’re a Sprint customer, you can still get this phone new from Amazon Wireless, and it will only set you back a 2 year commitment. And a penny. Pure Android goodness, ICS and the Nexus brand for a penny? How did this phone not make the top 5?

Specs:

  • Network: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 HSDPA 900 / 1700 / 2100
  • Processor: 1 GHz Cortex-A8
  • Display: 4″ Super AMOLED
  • OS: Android OS, v2.3 (Gingerbread), upgradable to v4.0
  • Camera :  5 MP, 2560 x 1920 pixels, 1.2MP Front
  • Video : WVGA@30fps
  • Memory: 16GB storage, 512MB RAM
  • Size:  123.9 x 63 x 10.9 mm and weighs 129 g
  • Battery:  1500mAh
