Samsung’s Galaxy S III is by far one of the most anticipated Android smartphones to come out this year and they’re on track to sell a heck of a lot of them, unless of course more catch on fire. As we’ve seen with some devices in the past, this kind of thing can happen. While rare, with the right mix of the wrong or too much voltage and all sorts of other factors, smartphones can catch on fire which can cause anywhere from a nice burnt spot to like the iPhone, the screen practically exploding from the battery exploding.
On Boards.ie, a forum for all sorts of topics and categories, user dillo2k10 based out of Dublin, posted “Galaxy S3 EXPLODES” and went on to explain what happened, eventually supplying several very high quality photos of the damage. Basically what happened was he was driving along and had the Galaxy plugged in and sitting in his car mount when all of a sudden he saw a white flame, sparks, and then a bang sound came from the phone.
The port where the phone was plugged in was burnt to a crisp and oddly, the phone was still working, just no signal. He tried to get a replacement where he bought it, but they they said they couldn’t do anything and would have to send it away to Samsung to investigate the problem. Fortunately, Samsung contacted him and the head of customer service came out to see him and give him a replacement.
In the meantime, Samsung is investigating the issue with the Galaxy S III and hopefully is just a case of an issue with his setup and not the phone. If it’s an issue with the phone, that would spell bad news for Samsung as they’d have to replace every single one.
