With all of the capabilities of today’s Android phones and tablets there’s a couple of really big victims and that’s battery life and your data allowance. Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz surrounding dat and the carriers, with Verizon cracking down on unlimited data it looks like rationing those Megabytes might become important after all.
Google seem to have realised all of this and have announced the Cloud Messenging platform for developers. The idea behind the platform is that it will send information to applications without actually sending the information. For instance, the app will notify you of an incoming message with a photo attached without actually sending it to you. This is going to stop data running away on you and give you tighter control of it on the whole.
The platform is going to be a welcome addition to developers as well, enabling them to build apps that send info back and forth both quickly and efficiently with a light footprint. It’s good to see Google moving with the times and moulding Android to whatever works in order to deliver a seamless experience to its users.
Of course, I’m sure that we’ll have more about this tomorrow, just like the picture suggests!
