It’s been a long time since Ice Cream Sandwich hit the scene with the Galaxy Nexus, such a long time in fact that it was last year and yet still, Samsung’s successful Galaxy Tab line hadn’t received the update. Now, you could say that Android 4.0 on tablets hadn’t been proven but, again it’s a very long time since we saw ICS on a tablet; the Motorola XOOM had it update to Ice Cream Sandwich some time ago.
Still, better late than never is a good enough mantra to live by and, to that end Samsung is finally almost, nearly there to getting round to updating their Galaxy Tab line to ICS. I suppose that it’s not all that easy to get updates out when you pretty much have a tablet for every screen size on the planet but; with three of the models running the same resolution and similar hardware I question why it took Sammy so long. Perhaps creating the SIII was more a mammoth task than we first believed. The folks over at Sammobile have the lowdown on what’s getting updated and the list is below:-
- GT-P6210 Galaxy Tab Plus 7.0 WIFI
- GT-P6200 Galaxy Tab Plus 7.0 WIFI + 3G
- GT-P6810 Galaxy Tab 7.7 WIFI
- GT-P6800 Galaxy Tab 7.7 WIFI + 3G
- GT-P7310 Galaxy Tab 8.9 WIFI
- GT-P7300 Galaxy Tab 8.9 WIFI + 3G
- GT-P7510 Galaxy Tab 10.1 WIFI
- GT-P7500 Galaxy Tab 10.1 WIFI + 3G
Whilst the updates are planned to start in July Sammobile are reporting that most of them will happen in August so, you’re going to have to wait even longer to get the latest on a tablet you probably played more than you should have for. I wonder if Samsung realises that this hasn’t sent a good message to their customers, whilst their friends with Acer and ASUS devices – even Archos devices – have gotten their updates to Android 4.0, it must be pretty galling. I suppose we should all give Samsung a round of applause for at least upgrading these devices at all; unlike the original Galaxy Tab and Galaxy S.
