It looks like the VLC Media Player is going to making an official arrival on Android very soon. That is if a tweet from the VideoLAN Twitter Profile reading “Android, here we come!”. There’s no telling when the player will be hitting the Play Store but, I’m sure that the VideoLAN team will let us know more when they have more to tell us.
Previously, on Android you could well install VLC from a thread on XDA that would get you unofficial builds compiled for a variety of different processors. This was nice and I featured in a Tablet Tuesday article a while back. Problem with this was though, it was hardly final code and whilst the builds have gotten better and better over time they had no support from those creating the app. Having a release on the Play Store should ensure support from VideoLAN themselves and make for a better product.
VLC is the media player that many of us have been relying on to play everything and anything. If there’s a video file that won’t run in QuickTime or Windows Media Player you can rest assured that it’ll play – and play well – in VLC. It’s incredibly cross-platform as well, it runs on pretty much every OS out there and I’ve been enjoying it for years on my Linux machine. With video becoming one of the most prevalent uses for tablets and phones getting beautiful HD screens like the One X and Galaxy S III, it’s going to be nice to have a fantastic video player like this hit our great platform.
I’m sure that the VideoLAN team will have more to tell us soon and we may in fact, be a lot closer to a release than we think we are. If you didn’t already know that you could get your hands on VLC for Android and want to have a look at it before it becomes official then you can do, here at XDA.
