Like any other day in technology, would it be of any surprise that Apple is yet again trying to attack Android? Apple seems to be declaring war on just about anyone they can these days. The most recent victim is the Android Market.
Apple is the known author of the patent that allows for “displaying content on touchscreens.” This would be for displays that list pictures, albums, e-mails, and even individual documents. Apple has developed this patent since 2007, and it is “widely” protected. This patent also covers the “scrollable display of documents, and the scroll bar itself.”
So how does this pertain to Google and Android? According to a blog on “The Verge” Google has implemented what is called the “disappearing scroll bar.” This is what has experts speculating that it could cause serious trouble for Android.
Another site had this to say regarding the patent:
“The patent outlines the interaction between hardware and various apps including Contacts, Telephone, Browsing and Widgets such as Stocks and Weather.”
Of course, Apple still needs to find a good defense to this “war” as it could mean the end of the ever so loved Android OS. Not many of those fans will be too pleased with Apple should this end in their favor. As this news has poured out, many of Steve Jobs quotes have been cited. This is one that he said regarding Android:
“I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s US$40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong….I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear on this.”
Ouch! That’s a pretty aggressive quote from the man himself. Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook was a bit more “softer” in his statement:
“From our point of view, it’s important that Apple not be the developer for the world. We can’t take all of our energy and all of our care and finish the painting, then have someone else put their name on it.”
Apple is definitely out there, and using their A game as many saw when they had the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Nexus removed from sale in the UK. A statistic was put out that for the month of July Apple was responsible for 60% of lawsuits involving mobile patents. That is a good chunk of the mobile manufacturers.
Let’s hope that this yet another patent war that will be thrown out once it reaches the courts. Otherwise, it will put Android in huge jeopardy.
